Location
Mountain Friends Camp has traveled and roamed between Utah, Colorado and New Mexico since our first one-week season in 2010. Since 2017, our home has been the beautiful Collins Lake Ranch, near Mora, New Mexico.
Collins Lake Ranch, Mora, New Mexico:
Every year our hosts have worked hard to make new changes and improvements to the space. Collins Lake Ranch Autism Center is a nonprofit organization located near Mora NM; their mission is “to provide meaningful opportunities to people with developmental disabilities who desire to participate in a rural mountain community.” Campers and staff enjoy the gorgeous mountain valley location (with a 12 acre lake, sports field, organic garden, and a few farm animals!) and value the potential for our program and campers to grow through connecting and building community with those with disabilities. Mountain Friends Camp has separate campground area, including a modern bathhouse, sleeping and program yurts, kitchen and outdoor dining pavilion (all built starting in 2016!), fire circles and space for outdoor activities, along with daily access to the waterfront, ranch animals, garden, hiking trails and meadows on the ranch. We also take occasional trips into the Mora area and up into the nearby Carson National Forest.
At the Collins Lake Ranch Autism Center (CRLAC) there are currently four adults with developmental disabilities living full time, with support from a holistically trained, 24/7 staff. Mora area school and community groups are also on the property from time to time, but in an area separate from the Autism Center and our campground. Over the years, the amount of joint or community programs and engagement has varied, due to individual client and group needs, and the public health situation. Mountain Friends Camp staff are always present and responsible for campers, and aware of who else is on the property, and communicate regularly with Collins Lake Ranch (CRL) Autism Center staff about shared space and goals throughout the summer. In past summers, we have spent time with CLR residents for occasional meals, craft projects, performances, and relaxing near the lake. We are looking forward to another summer at Collins Lake Ranch!
